You know what I like about SMTP...?

It's such a polite protocol.

In witness thereof I give you the following exchange between me and my mail server. I was doing a 'manual' connection (pointing telnet at port 25 -- the SMTP port number) to verify connectivity through the firewall. My commands are in bold, the mail server's responses are in italics.
beta:~$ telnet wixer.syrinx.org 25
Trying 199.105.240.21...
Connected to wixer.syrinx.org.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 wixer.syrinx.org ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.11/8.12.11; Thu, 11 May 2006 09:13:54 -0400
HELO beta.houseofhum.com
250 wixer.syrinx.org Hello beta [65.75.17.32], pleased to meet you
QUIT
221 2.0.0 wixer.syrinx.org closing connection
Connection closed by foreign host.
...If only some people could be that pleasent. :-)

One of my favorite SMTP messages was from MMDF. If you gave a HELO hostname that didn't match a reverse DNS lookup (but did match a valid host), it would happily print:

250 my.hostname.invalid - you are a charlatan

BwaHaHaHaHa!!

I'm glad I finished drinking my tea before I pulled up LJ ... 'cause it would have come out of my nose just now!
