Perhaps it's just me

It may just be the sequential part of my abstract sequential brain showing through. I have a really hard time with the way blogs present information in newest-to-oldest order. Having the newest post on top is handy in terms of knowing how recently someone has posted, but it makes reading a pain. If you read the posts from top to bottom, you're reading backwards in time. If you scroll down to the last thing you read and work your way up, you wind up doing this screen-scrolling shoe-shine act -- up and down, up and down -- as you finish reading one post, scroll up to find the start of the next, and then read down that one. Sigh.

This is probably related to my need to orient paper maps so that North on the sheet is actually pointing North. It has to do with how things fit in my head: a very keen but very rigid sense of spatial order.

In re: blogs and maps -

I was wondering if I was the only person that thought that LJ should offer a feature that allows oldest-to-newest viewing.

And on top of that, I'm the guy that always resets the GPS so that it shows my absolute position in relation to the compass points (for instance, if I turn right, the map rotates so that north is always, well, north), but I seem to be the only person that does that.

So no, it's not just you.

Yay! I'm not a freak! Or, at least, I'm not a unique freak!

No, you're not. Think of it as the difference between the Outlook-centric view, and the Usenet-centric view. People who have been around teh intarwebs for more than five years or so prefer chronological order, and people of the MTV generation prefer to lose interest after the first three lines, because the email has no jump-cuts, camera-twitches, explosions, or nekkid chix boobs. ...well, most emails, anyways. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the old farts are going GET OFFA MY LAWN, YOU GODDAMN KIDS...

Sense and sarcasm!

For me it wasn't Usenet, it was WWIV. I'm such a throwback that I still use a TTY-based mail reader at home (Pine).

Why don't you turn your monitor upside down?

Sorry, couldn't resist.
