|My Friday morning project had me finally fix something that had been lingering for a loooong time. Back in '99 at matociquala's going-away party there was, let us say, enthusiastic dancing. Said dancing cracked one of the floor joists under the living room. The joist was weak there was a huge knot and some funky grain and it split right where you would have expected it to. The next day, or the day after that, I picked up a column jack from the local hardware store and jacked the joist back up. Ever since it's been on my to-do list to put in a permanent fix.|
Friday I picked up a 2x8 at Home Despot and a pile of nuts, bolts and washers from the local hardware (you know, the only one in town that survived the arrival of Home Despot) and set about cutting, drilling, hammering, and bolting. I sandwiched the cracked joist between two pieces of new 2x8 and secured everything with four bolts on either side of the crack. The results are pretty good, if I say so myself. I even managed not to scald myself on the radiator pipe.
After six years it seems odd to not have this pole in the middle of the basement. Now I just need to get that storm door installed.
