A question...

Back in the nascent days of the 'net, when all anybody had was dialup, keeping your favorites was pretty simple. There was one PC in the house with Netscape on it, and that was pretty much it. Everyone in a while I'd grab a copy of my bookmarks.html file from my work PC, and *zot* all of my bookmarks were in one place. Not so with IE on a bunch of machines, some of them part of the household domain, some of them on the domain at work, some of them loners.

I still like the idea of bookmarks. There are lots of things I'd like to have handy to revisit without having to run them down on Google every time I want to find them. So, does anybody have any suggestions on how to corral favorites/bookmarks on a bunch of machines into one place?

Okay, my iMacs have this capability with iSync, a feature that's a part of a pay service offered by Apple for Mac users. You run iSync on one computer, and it uploads bookmarks, address book contact info, etc to the .Mac service database. (You choose what you want Synced.) Then, you start up the next computer and run iSync, and it updates that computer with what's online.

So, there may be something similar out there for the dark side. ;-)

I'm thinking of something pretty simple and self-contained; a MySQL database and a little bit of Perl scripting ... a web app where you can add URLs, search on URLs and notes, and edit/delete entries. Shouldn't be that hard. I just need to find the time to code the damn thing. :-)

Win2k pro ... I'm resisting Micro$oft Windows eXtortion Plan with all my might. I'm contemplating switching off to OS/X or Linux when MS ends support for 2K.

Oh, and, welcome to the pond! I friended you so now you can see all of my seeeeekrit 'career limiting' posts bitching about Hartford. :-)
