OK, it looks like I am going through a circuit turn-up from Hell, on a circuit that's at someone else's house. The ISP sent me a known good modem to test with. The test modem works fine; no dropped packets and the upstream throughput is up around 320kbps (which, with overhead, is what I would expect a 384kbps line to be giving me). So, I now have a date with the local telco on Thursday "between 8 AM and noon" to meet them on-site so that they can do testing. I am more than just a little inclined to ask the ISP to rebate me for first month of DSL service. Sigh. Soon. Soon this will all be done and I can get down to the work of moving all of my web sites onto alpha and beta.
