The long walk home

Being the geek that I am, I ran a traceroute to see what the path looks like from our hotel in Dennisport Mass to my mail server at home in Glastonboring:

Dennisport, MA > Yarmouth > Mashpee > Marion [Entering Marion!] > Foxboro > Needham > Hartford, CT > New York, NY [leaving Comcast, going to Cox] > Providence, RI > Glastonbury ... and back! With a roundtrip time averaging 56 milliseconds.

Many years ago (you know, 1991) I was working at the EFF, at that time still in Cambridge. Thinking Machines (remember them?) was just a block or two away, close enough to walk to for lunch in their lobby café.

Traceroutes from us to them: (UUNET/Alternet:) Cambridge > Brookline, MA > Reston, VA > (NSFnet:) College Park, MD > Ann Arbor, MI > (JvNCnet:) Princeton, NJ > New York, NY > New Haven, CT > (NEARnet:) Cambridge > Boston > Cambridge.

(That last bit was a pair of microwave hops from MIT to BU to TM.)

Later, the Princeton-Cambridge path was shortened up, and eventually eliminated.

That's wonderfully obtuse. I don't think that I've seen one that bad ... the Internet is so much 'meshier' now...
