Not doing what I need to be doing

What I need to be doing is preparing for next week's game. This contextually rich and deep universe does not get contextually rich or deep from a few hasty notes jotted down ninety minutes before game time. So far, I'm running about three hours of prep per hour played. We have six hour sessions.

Instead, what I am doing is blowing a lot of time into icons ... one of which is a riff on an advertising campaign so old that Google doesn't even remember it. Viola:

Do you use any particular software to create the icons?

Mostly Photoshop, with some other tools.

For the Criminal Minds icon I started here. For the text I dug up a hairy old piece of image editing software (PhotoFinish) that, at 1600x zoom, give you a pixel grid -- much easier for hand-creating those 5x5 pixel characters.

For the "Cisco Powered Network" riff I dug up a 3" wide Cisco logo, printed it and put it on my light-box. I then drew two sheets by hand -- one tracing over the bridge part of the logo with a sharpie for the "hooks", and the other creating the "loops" part of the velcro with a fine-tip pen. I then scanned them and composited them in Photoshop. All of that work was done at 300 dpi, and then squished 10:1 to create the final product.
